The 5-Second Label Test: How to Spot 'Junk' in Disguise

Food companies are smart. They know you are busy. They know you want to buy healthy food for your child. So, they put words like "Natural," "Whole Wheat," and "No Added Sugar" on the front of the pack.

But the truth is hidden on the back. Here is the 5-Second Label Test to separate real food from junk food.

Step 1: Ignore the Front

Seriously. Don't even read it. The front is Marketing. The back is Science.

Step 2: The "First 3 Ingredients" Rule

In India (FSSAI rules), ingredients must be listed in descending order by weight.

  • The Rule: The first 3 ingredients make up the bulk of the product.
  • The Trap: If Ingredient #1 or #2 is Sugar (or one of its code names, see below), it’s a dessert, not a snack.
  • The Goal: The first ingredient should be a Whole Grain (e.g., "Whole Wheat Flour," "Ragi Flour," "Oats"). If it just says "Wheat Flour" (without the word 'Whole'), it is Maida.

Step 3: Spot the "Hidden Sugars"

Companies split sugar into different types so "Sugar" doesn't appear as the #1 ingredient. Watch out for these:

  • Maltodextrin: A starch that acts like sugar. Causes massive blood sugar spikes.
  • Liquid Glucose / Glucose Syrup: Common in biscuits.
  • Invert Syrup: Just another sugar syrup.
  • Fruit Juice Concentrate: Stripped of fiber, basically sugar syrup.

Step 4: The "Serving Size" Trick

Look at the Nutrition Table. Does it look low in sugar? Check the "Serving Size."

  • Trick: They might list the nutrition for "1 biscuit" (10g), knowing your child will eat at least 3.
  • Fix: Always look at the "Per 100g" column to compare products fairly.

Step 5: The "Number of Ingredients" Test

Count the number of ingredients.

  • Good: 5-7 ingredients (e.g., Dates, Nuts, Oats, Ghee).
  • Bad: 15+ ingredients with words you can't pronounce (e.g., Emulsifier 440, Acidity Regulator 330).

Conclusion

You don't need a PhD in chemistry to feed your child well. You just need 5 seconds. Flip the pack. Read the first line. Count the ingredients. If it sounds like a recipe your grandmother would make, buy it. If it sounds like a science experiment, put it back.
