The Palm Oil Problem: Why We Say No (And You Should Too)

10 min read

Pick up a packet of "Healthy" biscuits for kids. Flip it over. Look at the ingredients. Do you see "Edible Vegetable Oil"? Or "Palmolein"?

That is Palm Oil. And it is the most controversial ingredient in the world for a reason.

At Rise Kids, we have a zero-tolerance policy for Palm Oil. We don't use it. We never will. Here is why this was one of our easiest decisions—and why you should check your labels today.

1. The Calcium Thief (Health Impact)

Palm oil is often added to baby formula and toddler snacks because it is rich in palmitic acid, a fatty acid also found in breast milk. However, the molecular structure of palm oil is different.

The "Soap" Effect: When babies digest palm oil, the palmitic acid binds with calcium in their gut. Instead of being absorbed into the body to build bones, it forms insoluble "calcium soaps."

  • Result 1: Reduced Calcium absorption (weaker bones).
  • Result 2: Bloating and harder stools (constipation).

Research shows that babies fed palm oil-free diets have softer stools and better bone mineralization. Why risk it?

2. The Orangutan Crisis (Environmental Impact)

This is the heartbreaking part. Palm Oil is grown in tropical rainforests—the exact same home as the Orangutans.

To keep up with the world's addiction to cheap oil, massive swathes of rainforests in Indonesia and Borneo are burned down every day.

  • Habitat Loss: Orangutans are losing their homes at an alarming rate.
  • Extinction Risk: The Bornean Orangutan is now Critically Endangered.

Every time we buy a product with unsustainable palm oil, we are inadvertently funding this destruction.

3. The "Hidden" Names

Palm oil is a master of disguise. It hides under 200+ names on ingredient labels. If you see these, it’s likely Palm Oil:

  • Vegetable Fat / Vegetable Oil
  • Palmitate
  • Stearic Acid
  • Glyceryl Stearate
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (in shampoos)

The Rise Promise

We use Butter, Ghee, or Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil.

  • Why? Because they are whole foods. They are chemically stable. They taste better. And they don't destroy rainforests.
  • The Cost: Yes, using real butter costs us 4x more than using Palm Oil. But we believe your child's health (and the planet) is worth that premium.

Conclusion

Next time you are in the supermarket aisle, take 5 seconds to read the back. If you see "Vegetable Oil" without a specific source (like Sunflower or Olive), put it back.

Your purchase has power. Choose Palm Oil Free. For their tummy, and for the trees.
